Botero\u2019s art hangs in museums <br \/>\naround the world. He is incredibly famous. He is incredible wealthy.<br \/>\nHe has made thousands of paintings, each one worth<br \/>\nmore than most make in a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boterothedancersw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"444\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI like to paint pleasant things\u2026All of my life, by conviction,<br \/>\n I did subjects that were rather pleasant.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroballincolumbiaW.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"360\" height=\"326\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>As a young artist, Botero left Columbia for New York.<br \/>\nIn the 13 years he lived there, he painted only his private Columbia.<br \/>\nHe moved to Paris and resided there for more than 30 years. <br \/>\nBut Paris was never his subject. Only the quaint, charming <br \/>\nfigures from his mythic Columbia made the canvas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteropicnicw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All this time, the real Columbia was mired in disaster. <br \/>\nThere were massacres, kidnappings and torture. <br \/>\nGuerillas, paramilitary groups, government forces and <br \/>\nvicious drug cartels vied for control. Life was cheap. <br \/>\n200,000 Columbians were murdered while Botero painted.<\/p>\n<p>But decade after decade, the popular artist portrayed only a sweet, <br \/>\nwhimsical world of perpetual innocence. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroadamandevew.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"355\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>Then something happened. <\/p>\n<p>We do not know what. <\/p>\n<p>All we know is that as he approached his 70th year, <br \/>\nthe artist began painting things most unpleasant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteromassacreincolumbiaw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>He had heard and read the news reports.<br \/>\nHe had imagined the countless horrors of his homeland.<br \/>\nNow he took paint to canvas. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroboatw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"271\" height=\"200\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boterocarbombw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"143\" height=\"200\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteromasacredemejoresquina.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"360\" height=\"278\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The fat images were no longer funny.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boterokillerw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boterostreetkillingw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The world famous artist did not sell these paintings.<br \/>\nHe gave them to the people of Columbia,<br \/>\ndonating the work to the National Museum of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>Botero seemed to be changing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroprisonerbackw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"240\" height=\"343\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>When he read of the crimes at Abu Ghraib, <br \/>\nhe said he felt he must do something.<br \/>\nSo he began to draw. He began to paint.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroprisonermoundw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"235\" height=\"258\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroprisonerw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"196\" height=\"258\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>His prisoners carry the voluminous corpulence that is his trademark, <br \/>\nbut now they wear their flesh as a kind of stark testament <br \/>\nto their tortures. The images are emphatic, insistent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroabutwomenw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><i> \u201cI wanted to recreate the atmosphere in the prison with scenes <br \/>\nthat were not scenes in the photos, to make some idea of the feeling, <br \/>\nso that I could communicate some idea of the horrors that were going on\u2026<br \/>\nIn painting there is this concentration of emotion through time, <br \/>\nleaving out everything that doesn\u2019t concern the subject, <br \/>\nand this makes the images in painting have special meaning\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Art has the capacity to make us remember a situation for a long time.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boteroabudogw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"400\" height=\"333\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>The artist who found fame and fortune creating<br \/>\namusing figures from a quaint land of the past<br \/>\nnow turns to our world and our time,<br \/>\nand says terrible and unjust events must not go forgotten.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfingthespectacle.com\/images\/uploads\/boterobeforepaintingsw.jpg\" border=\"10\" alt=\"image\" name=\"image\" width=\"380\" height=\"297\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIt has to be remembered\u2026.I could not stay silent.
